A New Era Has Begun In TNA

a new era has begun in TNA
By THE Wrestling Times -  Notions of a new era has begun in TNA Impact Wrestling when Bobby Roode defeated Immortal’s Bully Ray in an impromptu Bound for Glory series overtime match to become the number one contender for the TNA title at Bound for Glory. In a moment four months in the making, wrestling fans watched as Bobby Roode tied the score with Bully Ray by defeating Gunner via submission with the Fujiwara armbar, and, with only a match interval to rest, Roode pinning Ray with the Double R Spinebuster.

After the match, an emotional Roode soaked in the adulation from the fans, as Bully Ray looked on in disbelief with his opportunity to headline BFG, taking place in his old ECW stomping ground, having slipped from his fingers.
Congratulations to Bobby, and to Beer Money parter James Storm, who cut an inspirational promo on how Roode earned this opportunity. TNA has a worthy contender, who for once is TNA home-grown, as it enters this potential new era where wrestling indeed matters.
No Surrender also featured a three-way match for the TNA title as Kurt Angle defended against Sting and Mr. Anderson by order of The Network. With the help of Hulk Hogan, Kurt Angle continues to keep his hold on the title.
In other matches, Brian Kendrick lost the X division title to Austin AriesMatt Morgan defeated Samoa Joe;Winter regained the Knockouts title in her second consecutive pay-per-view victory over the defending champMickie JamesMexican America retained the Tag Team titles against the newly formed duo of Devon andD’Angelo Dinero; Bully Ray defeated James Storm; and Jesse Sorensen defeated Kid Kash for a shot at the X division title.

HITS & MISSES - WWE Night of Champions 9/18: Hunter-Punk, Cena-Del Rio, undercard title matches, look-ahead to HIAC

Randy Orton
By THE Wrestling Times -  -- 9/18 Night of Champions PPV Hits & Misses

PPV HITS

Air Boom vs. The Awesome Truth (WWE Tag Titles): This match was a strong way to start off Night of Champions. All four guys worked hard to get the crowd going (which was a good crowd for most of the night). I particularly liked the "missed tags" as it told a good story and kept alive the conspiracy theory in the minds of Miz and R-Truth. The finish was also fine with me because it kept the hunt for the Tag Titles alive and I think people thought the post-match interview would lead to some interference later in the night, which it did. A strong start to the PPV.

Dolph Ziggler vs. John Morrison vs. Jack Swagger vs. Alex Riley (U.S. Title): I was happy with this match and the finish was surprising (the false finishes were also very well done). I, honestly, thought we were going to see a title change here; specifically, I thought we would see Swagger take the gold. What's ironic is that this was the Raw title that didn't move elsewhere this weekend and I figured it would be one of two to change hands. With that said, I liked how the match unfolded and was surprised at how Riley was given more "star treatment" in this match rather than Morrison. It was also booked in a way that keeps the triangle between Swagger, Ziggler, and Vicki Guerrero going and I'm all for storylines unfolding over a longer period of time. If you're going to have a 4-way match, this was one of the better ways to book it.

Randy Orton vs. Mark Henry (World Heavyweight Title): I've liked pretty much everything about this feud so far and the NOC match-up was no exception. The match wasn't a five-star gem, but both guys worked their tails off and I even liked how it was played up so much during the match that Henry has been with WWE for 15 years and hasn't ever won the "big one." Henry definitely deserves a run with the title and after hearing his post-match promo, I hope he gets a strong run until at least early 2012. One theory floated my way was that Henry hold onto the title until WrestleMania and he could lose the title to the ultimate underdog, Daniel Bryan. The problems there are that neither guy has the credibility in the eyes of the common fan to be a main-eventer at the biggest show of the year, especially at this point, and a lot would have to be done to get those guys there. The only counterargument that could be made is that there is enough star power in Rock-Cena and potentially a top-notch WWE Title match that could carry the show and allow those two to pull that match off. However, I still don't see it happening.

Triple H vs. C.M. Punk (No DQ/COO title on the line): Was there too much interference in this match? Yes. Was this match over-booked? Yes. Did it feel like Vince Russo wrote the conclusion to it? Yes, again. However, the match was good enough before this all to become a hit and, while overbooked, I like that there were questions coming out of it that still need to be answered. Therefore, I stand firm on this as a hit and am still very interested at where WWE is headed with this story. There's a big difference between having one match/storyline overbooked and multiple matches/storylines overbooked like TNA does. I'm not down on this storyline yet and still look forward to seeing the main players in this storyline every Monday night.

PPV MISSES

Cody Rhodes vs. Ted DiBiase (Intercontinental Title): The work was there from both guys, but this feud was so rushed that I just couldn't get into the match. I think this feud could develop into something a little stronger but it just wasn't there at NOC. This feud is in the early stages, so the miss doesn't fall so much on the shoulders of DiBiase and Rhodes here. Also, worth nothing, was how could Jerry Lawler contest that Rhodes won by cheating? If anything, DiBiase was ready to attack Rhodes with his own mask before the roll-up that ended the match. I probably shouldn't lump in bad announcing with a miss on a match, but it just had to be said.

Kelly Kelly vs. Beth Phoenix (Divas Title): This match had the makings of an exciting moment for Beth Phoenix, WWE, and the fans in Buffalo. Instead, it sucked the life out of the building! Yes, a Divas match once again sucked the life out the building. But, this time is was because of the final booking decision and not because the fans just weren't interested in seeing "yet another bad Divas match" because the match wasn't bad at all. This was the most interested I've seen a live crowd get into a Divas match in quite some time (granted, it was in Phoenix's hometown) and the crowd was just crushed when Kelly got another "fluke win." One fluke was passable last month. Now, I'm afraid the ship has sailed and WWE has dropped the ball big time on any chance of reviving the women's division again.

Alberto Del Rio vs. John Cena (WWE Title): The best way to convey how I felt after this match concluded is to simply tell you exactly how I reacted. When Del Rio tapped out, I literally put my head in my hands and didn't look at the TV for at least three minutes. There are no legitimate challengers left that Cena hasn't beat clean. The Cena love-fest has me frustrated beyond belief and the only way I could potentially get behind anything involving Cena right now would be a massive overhaul that includes him turning heel. Of course, I highly doubt that this will happen. I would think that Cena fans would also not care too much about his title reigns anymore because they are so brief and the chases are so short that the conquest practically mean nothing. However, Cena's character is mostly catered to a younger crowd and I suppose it doesn't take much to get the fanbase excited (therein lies the problem), so nothing will probably change. As for Del Rio, he deserved much better for his first title run. He just won the title one month ago and is solid inthe ring and with his promos. I believe hHaving him lose to Cena this soon, in a clean manner, does nothing for him, the title, and WWE business in the long-run.

ANALYSIS/OVERALL GRADE

Overall, I thought this PPV started to tank after the Divas Title match. The energy was really zapped from the crowd and it also was a turning point for the rest of the show. It certainly wasn't a bad show by any means, but it wasn't a good one either. The undercard wasn't bad, but between the two main event matches that "sold the show," there was some disappointment, especially the WWE Title match. I'd say that it was a slightly above average show that didn't live up to its potential. NOC could've easily been a solid "B" to "B-plus" show, but instead graded out to about a "C."

Moving forward, there's only a two-week turnaround to the next PPV. So, there shouldn't be much hesitation in terms of booking matches for tonight's Raw. I'm assuming there will be Triple H and Punk in some sort of re-match, possibly involving KevinNash, in Hell in a Cell. Del Rio and Orton, more than likely, will also get their title re-matches. With the quick turnaround, I don't expect many fresh match-ups heading into that show. I also don't expect many more answers that concern the Punk-Triple H-Nash feud and I'm actually okay with that. I'd like to see this stretched out as long as possible. To those that have judged the storyline already, I still feel it's too early to do so, even if it seems like part of it have been fumbled. To those people, I say to wait it out and see what happens at the finish line.

In terms of the undercard, I think WWE will finally go with Ziggler-Swagger for the U.S. Title and I'd like to see more from Rhodes and DiBiase with the IC Title. Both feuds have potential and they could elevate both titles if they're given the proper time to build these feuds. Miz and Truth also are in an interesting mid-to-upper-card position. They are involved in a feud over the Tag Titles, while now also being sprinkled into the top feud on the show. I'm curious to see how this gets played out.

Other than anything involving Cena, I haven't given up on the slow build to some of the current WWE storylines. Every feud other than Cena-Del Rio that was featured at NOC seems to have a nice foundation to it with room for a nice, slow build. The Divas feud is definitely on life support, but when aren't the Divas feuds, and division for that matter? I still just hope WWE will stay the course with these other feuds despite the struggling ratings because they do have some legs to them.

KYGHT'S PPV EVALUATION - WWE NIGHT OF CHAMPIONS (09-18-11): Best/Worst Match, Memorable Moments, Best Move, Updated 2011 PPV Rankings

By THE Wrestling Times -  WWE Night of Champions PPV Evaluation
September 18, 2011

BEST MATCH - C.M. PUNK vs. TRIPLE H

WWE
I don't think it was the right move putting this match in the Main Event slot. It was certainly a compelling storyline and Triple H returning was a big story, but, to me, WWE should always have a title match at the top of the card. It's the prize that everyone is after, so it should be presented as such. That out of the way, I thought these two had a pretty great brawl to close out the show. The two men worked well together, and while the stipulation of Hunter losing his position as COO somewhat telegraphed who was going to win, they still did enough bell-to-bell to keep things interesting. Plus, the crowd seemed to love this match.

WORST MATCH - KELLY KELLY VS. BETH PHOENIX

Sad. Another pay-per-view with the Divas in the worst match slot. They tried, for certain. But, it never quite clicked and the general audience just doesn't seem to care about this division. There is definitely a way to fix this: present the Divas Title as important, and give the Divas storylines that actually are compelling. This should be easy.

BIGGEST SURPRISE - CENA TO THE UNDERCARD

I get that they were treating COO Triple H as the big deal at this show, but Cena defending the title before the end of the broadcast was definitely a surprise.

BIGGEST LETDOWN - NONE

This was a middle of the road show. Nothing blew me away, but everything was basically how I imagined going in.

BEST QUOTE: JERRY LAWLER

Jerry Lawler calling C.M. Punk's elbow drop from the top 'savage' was a nice touch. Well done, sir.

BEST MOVE: C.M. PUNK

No surprises here. The top-rope elbow drop through Triple H on the table was clearly move of the Night.

OTHER THOUGHTS

As I mentioned, this PPV was more like an extended television broadcast (albeit with a pretty good main event). Everything moved as it should, but it didn't feel like a big show going in and it didn't feel like one during it. It's a shame when it costs $50.

Cena and Del Rio didn't work well together at all, in my opinion. The match seemed sluggish, and hopefully they figure out how to get these men into programs that better suit them moving forward.

Also, two weeks until the next PPV?! Wow, WWE. I know they expect 'Hell In The Cell' to draw just based on the gimmick, but it's a little much to ask of their audience when they're cramming shows this close together. And, another show will be on before the end of October. Here's an idea: let things breathe, a little.

The Un-Fortune-Ate Challenge of Bobby Roode

Bobby Roode
By THE Wrestling Times -  With the BFG series firmly behind him, Bobby Roode has been precariously placed in the opposing corner against his stablemates of Fortune. This sudden new challenge, devised by the reigning TNA World champion Kurt Angle, has the potential to not only create hostility within Fortune, but to weaken Roode’s mental fortitude.
Bobby’s first opponent was Kazarian. The former 5-time X division champion wrestled with urgency from the initial lock up, to the rapid succession of hammerlocks. However, Roode kept overpowering the lock ups, and reversing the hammerlock holds. Frustrated, Kazarian attempted some high risk spots that yielded no reward because Roode kept evading the springboard and the slingshot maneuvers.  Kazarian’s demeanor completely changed when Roode countered his Hangman’s neckbreaker DDT into a bridging suplex. The self-proclaimed Future of TNA struck Roode’s head with several stiff punches, urging him to wrestle back.
Kurt Angle’s mission, as apparent when he spoke to Kazarian prior to his match, was to cause dissention and strife within Fortune by promising future title shots to those successful against Bobby Roode. Although an ingenious effort by the Olympic Gold Medalist, Kazarian was unsuccessful in pinning Roode. In a momentary lapse of judgement, Kazarian almost exited the ring without congratulating Roode for being the better man. This would have been Kurt’s consolation prize, but Kazarian did the right thing by shaking his hand and adding, “You are ready.”
Bobby Roode’s road to Bound for Glory is an unpleasant one. With Fortune put on notice that if they choose not to wrestle against Bobby Roode, their place in the company would dwindle to that of enhancement talents, each match that Bobby has from now until BFG will be at their best. Thinking about it, what better way to prepare for the biggest match of his career than to take on the best collective group of wrestlers that the company has to offer?
Kurt Angle has been regarded as a “Wrestling Machine,” able to put on show stealing matches even when the cameras aren’t rolling. So for Roode’s sake, he needs to risk his friendships with James StormAJ Styles,Christopher Daniels, and Kazarian if he expects to be at his best come Bound for Glory.

-- With a quick two-week turnaround to the Hell in a Cell PPV on October 2, WWE will likely set up re-matches for the Raw and Smackdown brands's top titles. On the Raw side, new WWE champion John Cena will likely defend against Alberto Del Rio. TNA News: Hulk Hogan's "huge announcement" at Wednesday's TV taping, Ric Flair injury details

Hulk Hogan's "huge announcement"
By THE Wrestling Times -  -- At Wednesday's Impact Wrestling TV taping for the September 29 episode, Hulk Hogan announced plans to retire from wrestling. He said he will have more details on the announcement at next Wednesday's TV tapings in Knoxville, Tenn. leading to the Bound for Glory PPV.

Hogan used the promo as an attempt to put over the younger wrestlers on the roster and point to the likes of Beer Money as the future of the company. Hogan's two year-contract is set to expire this fall after signing with TNA in fall 2009. Although unconfirmed, it remains to be seen if Hogan's announcement is the first step in separating from TNA.

Hogan is invested in several outside projects including Micro Championship Wrestling, his new video game, his speaking engagement tour, and a new TV show he claims to be negotiating with TV executives to launch. The impression Hogan gives off to the locker room - and to viewers watching his recent promo work - is he has checked out mentally from TNA.

-- At Monday's TV taping for Thursday's show, Ric Flair gave TNA officials a scare when he appeared to be having health issues during his match against Sting.

Related to a potential injury, at one point during the match, Flair clutched his shoulder and rolled out of the ring to collect himself. After the match, Flair came backstage to ice his arm.

EPW - Telethon Bash gets HARDCORE!!

EPW Wrestling
By THE Wrestling Times - For months, Gavin McGavin has relentlessly pursued five victories that would give him a shot at the elusive EPW Championship. With three wins under his belt, McGavin was starting to make this nigh impossible task look like it might just become a reality.

But his persistence attitude has made him a powerful enemy in Brett Corvus. As the head of the EPW Board of Directors, Corvus has major influence over all decisions and he let it be known at Hell or Highwater that he would make McGavin’s path to a title shot as painful as it possibly could be.
Well now Corvus has changed his mind. But he certainly hasn’t changed his attitude.
He has awarded Gavin McGavin a shot at an EPW title at the Telethon Bash. Unfortunately for the ‘Shootfighter’, it will come against the dominant EPW Hardcore Champion‘Shotgun’ Tyler Jacobs.
Even worse for McGavin, Corvus has appointed himself the special guest referee for the match. If he is to take home the gold on September 17th, McGavin best be prepared to take a beating at the hands of the ‘Godfather of Hardcore’.

WWE News: Night of Champions results - Triple H retains COO position after wild main event & big return

By THE Wrestling Times -

WWE's Night of Champions PPV
Triple H is still the on-air WWE COO after pinning C.M. Punk in the main event of WWE's Night of Champions PPV Sunday night.

After an expected stream of outside interference, Hunter delivered a Pedigree on Punk to score the pin and retain his COO position after a 25-minute match.

The main event also marked the return of Kevin Nash, who interfered against both Hunter and Punk during the match. Nash was taken out by Hunter with a sledgehammer, though, prior to the finish.

At the end of the PPV, the tone was WWE setting up Monday's Raw to try to find answers to a chaotic main event. Lead announcer Michael Cole lost his voice during the third hour, leaving Booker T and Jerry Lawler to call the main event and set up potential answers to questions on Raw.

During the main event, other interference came from The Miz and R-Truth, whose storyline purpose on TV and on the PPV was to eliminate Hunter as COO. However, both heels were thwarted by Hunter.

Also involved in the match was John Laurinaitis, who sent a second referee into the ring to attempt to count a pinfall for Punk on Hunter after original ref Scott Armstrong was KO'ed by Miz and Truth. It continued Laurinaitis's on-air feud with Hunter.

Ric Flair Comments on His Match Against Sting

By THE Wrestling Times - Ric Flair was recently interviewed by Mike Mooneyham of the Post and Courier regarding his match against Sting from last week’s episode of iMPACT Wrestling. During the interview, Flair commented on the elbow injury that he sustained during among other related items. Here are some notable quotes from the interview:
Referring to the superplex: “It was brutal. I thought I had broken my arm on that spot. I don’t know how I did it either.”
On how he was injured during that move: “Sting put me down flat on that superplex, but somehow I hit something. It broke the bursa sack in my elbow. But at that moment I was sure I had broken my arm in half. I must have put my arm down wrong or something. I really don’t know how it happened. I’ve got one arm twice the size of the other right now.”
What his doctor told him about the injury: “I went to the doctor today (Friday) and he said to just keep an eye on it for infections. But I feel great. Nothing hurts.”
